4,598 companies were filed in New York State last week, and Albany is the second county - what US state registers really say about new businesses

Six US states publish their business register as open data with a query API: New York, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and Pennsylvania. No key, no scraping of HTML, exact filing dates. On 7 November 2026 I counted the companies filed between 31 October and 6 November in the four that update at least weekly, with the same query the US New Business Leads Actor runs every morning. Three things stood out.

1. The week in four states

State New companies (31 Oct – 6 Nov) LLC share
New York 4,598 72%
Colorado 3,194 89%
Connecticut 918 95%
Oregon 339 (one weekly batch, 2 Nov) –

Per working day, New York files about 850 companies, Colorado 550, Connecticut 170. The weekend is not zero: the registers still record the Saturday and Sunday filings made online (New York 149 and 169, Colorado 197 and 248), they just publish them in a thinner trickle.

New companies per day, four states

The daily curve is the same in the three daily states: a Monday peak (New York 962, Colorado 582, Connecticut 186) that fades to Friday (716, 486, 97). Oregon publishes once a week, hence its single bar on Monday 2 November with 339 companies. If your “new companies this week in Oregon” feed shows nothing from Tuesday to Sunday, the register is not empty, it is weekly.

2. Albany is not a startup hub

By county, New York’s week reads Brooklyn (Kings) 700, then Albany 588, ahead of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. Albany is the state capital, with 320,000 inhabitants in the county. It is second because that is where registered-agent offices are: companies formed from anywhere in the state (and from other states) give the address of an agent in Albany to receive legal papers.

The practical consequence for lead lists: for roughly two in three New York companies, the published address is not where the business is. The Actor returns the address only when the register marks it as the company’s own, and leaves it empty otherwise, rather than sending you to a law office on State Street.

3. Texas: 32 companies this week, 18,918 this month

The same query on the Texas register (the Comptroller’s franchise-tax file) gives 32 companies for the last 7 days and 18,918 for the last 30 days. The register is not slow at filing: it lists a company about ten days after its charter, so the most recent week is always almost empty and fills in later. Ask for 21 to 30 days, or you will conclude that Texas has stopped creating companies.

The Actor says so in its free summary row (knownDelay) instead of returning an empty list silently. The same is true, to a lesser extent, of Pennsylvania, which publishes monthly.

What these registers do not publish

No emails, no phone numbers, no websites: a company filed four days ago has none of that yet. The Actor also never requests the columns that name people (organizers, agents, officers) even where the state exposes them; it returns the company, its type, its filing date, the address when it is the company’s, the NAICS code when the state publishes it (Connecticut does), and a link to the official record.
